Undermanagement

‘Undermanagement’ is something I hear about often. Usually due to frustrations with the quality of results, or a perceived lack of accountability.

It’s sometimes mislabelled as an ‘empowering’ approach, but is in fact a practice of incomplete delegation, whereby worked is passed down the line without sufficient oversight, support or quality control.

This results in poor quality outcomes, a lack of team development and low levels of team accountability.

Yes, sometimes an avoidance of conflict is playing out, but it’s also a lack of understanding of the ongoing role of manager as ‘teacher’ after something has been delegated until completion.

Have you experienced this? What else might be happening here?
