Career Crisis

Should I stay or should I go? It’s a big decision - the devil you know, or into the ether?

The pandemic has provided an excellent opportunity for reflection and a desire for something fresh and different (not to mention ease of getting to interviews).

However, this question isn't new to my coaching conversations as coaching is often about often helping people get ‘unstuck’. To help them get clarity, to tease out the important things, make good decisions and move forward with confidence.

Whether it’s an internal change or moving to a new organisation, here are some things to consider if you’re feeling stuck:

  • What do you want ideally? (What you really want, not just what you can do)

  • What do you value most? i.e. Flexibility, challenge, security, role level, remuneration – be honest with yourself)

  • What criteria will you use to assess your options?

  • What are your options?

  • What gives you energy? Depletes it?

  • What are your strengths? Are you truly a good fit for the various options at play?

  • Who will you be reporting to? Leaders make or break any role, no matter how good it is.

  • Have you done your research? Find out as much as you can about the team, the organisation, the role, the leader, the challenges.

My advice is not to be driven by fear or insecurity. Back yourself and go for what you want.

Q: What's helped you to make the decision to stay or go in the past?
