There will always be people in the workplace who are tricky to deal with. People who are harder to connect to. Who don’t seem to care, listen, deliver, or understand. Whatever the issue, it just grinds your gears! 🙄
Over time, this can become really frustrating, annoying, baffling, intimidating, or even offensive. Ultimately, it can become quite the thorn in your side.
The hard truth is that in order to be successful and make an impact, we need to be able to collaborate with diverse personalities in order to lead, engage, influence, and inform.
Typically, they will have a distinctly different communication style to you. In coaching it's sometimes referred to as the 'allergy of the opposite'.
One way to address this, is to take control of what you can, and adapt your natural style to that of the other person.
Consider the specific person in mind. Do they:
🤔 Speak quickly or slowly?
🤔Show interest in people, facts, or results?
🤔Prioritize accuracy, control, stability, or relationships?
🤔 Talk very directly, warmly, or quietly and calmly?
🤔 Get straight to the point, dive into detail or get excited about possibilities?
🤔Prefer speed or consideration? Facts or strategy?
Here are some easy ways to adapt your communication style:
🔹Adjust your voice volume up or down
🔹Modify the speed of your speech to be faster or slower
🔹Determine whether small talk will help or hinder
🔹Focus on the headline, the data, the vision or the people, depending on their interest
Adapting your style can be a bridge to greater understanding and an authentic connection, because the other person feels heard and understood.
It doesn't mean that your needs go unmet, but paves the way for more effective communication, which can happen at speed. You never know, you might even end up liking each other!
