Strategic planning days don't have to be tedious.
Quite the opposite. They should be an exciting time to think big picture and gain clarity collectively on what truly matters.
One of the greatest benefits of getting together is the opportunity to connect with each other away from daily work demands, and to free up space for critical thinking and reflection.
Here the key elements that I've found most important over the years for a successful strategy session:
💠 Pre-consultation: Engage participants and seek input from key stakeholders prior
💠 Partnership: The facilitator is not the expert on your business, but must understand it. Partnering closely throughout the process is critical to balance objectivity with understanding and guide the group through to outcomes.
💠 Psychological safety: Create a space where everyone is comfortable and safe to voice their opinion or disagree respectfully
💠 Enjoyment: Have a laugh, get to know each other, make space for authentic connection. An enjoyable and engaging day will achieve much greater results and have lasting benefits for the team.
💠 Process: A robust process that allows space for discussion but moves through to reflection, exploration and prioritisation to aligned outcomes in the timeframe.
💠 Leadership: A leader who is committed to bringing the plans to life and will persist through the challenges of execution.
❔ What else makes strategic planning work well? (or not?!)
